Inuit shamanism, hunting and divination in contemporary Nunavut, Canada

【発表要旨】

Shamanism is an old tradition in Inuit society, but it merged with Christianity in the last century. In this paper, I will show that setting up a dichotomy between a past identified with traditional culture and a present involving Christianity obscures the continuity and dynamic nature of Inuit society, which has long borrowed and adapted "outside" elements. Shamanism and Christianity are in a constant state of change in the Arctic and these traditions are still very present. I will here discuss the adequacy as well as the problems of using theoretical notions such as animism ad perspectivism to understand these traditions embedded in a hunting way of life. A short visual sequence on qilaniq will also be presented and discussed.
