モダンとモラル：日本における近代化と倫理の再構成

私の日本における研究の根底には、「なぜ日本社会は、戦後まもなく180度の転回が可能であったのか」という問題意識がある。日本の価値体系の変容を考察することは、この問いの答えを見出すにあたり、重要な意味を持つ。 価値概念は社会文化システムにおいて比較的ゆっくりと変化するものだとすれば、当時、日本が短期間に見事なまでに新しい主義や目標を志向し得た（少なくとも、表面上はそう見えた）のはまさに驚くべきことである。 このことは私にとって、「日本には〈普遍主義的な倫理〉が存在するのか否か」、という問題を提起する。 一年間の研究インタビューを踏まえて私は、日本の人々が戦時中、徹底的に目的へと向かっていったのは、70余年の近代化を経てもなお、倫理意識が集団と権威の命じるままであったためではないかと考えている。したがって、日本の人々が戦後新しい権威の全く違う目標を支持したということもまた、転換ではなく、むしろある種の継続であったといえるのではないか。 さて、こうした推論は、次のような新たな問いへとつながる。 「あれからさらに60年が過ぎた今、何が日本の倫理的基盤となっているのか。 日本では普遍主義的な倫理に向けてなにか動きがあったのか。 或いは、倫理意識は今もなお個別主義的な集団において実現されるのか。」 以上、非常に難しい問題ではあるが、現代人類学研究会で刺激的な議論をしたいと考えている。

Why was it possible for Japanese society to make a complete volte-face at the end of World War II? If one maintains that values are one of the more slowly changing elements of a sociocultural system, it is indeed quite remarkable that Japan was able at that time to reorient its stated goals and principles so suddenly and yet so successfully, or at least to appear to do so on the surface. This inquiry has led me to examine whether there exists in Japan such a thing as a "universalistic ethic." My research has led me to conclude that one important reason people in wartime Japan were able to reorient their goals so drastically was that even after more than seven decades of modernization, ethical value still resided in the act of complying with the dictates of group and authority. In this sense, their endorsement of the very different goals of a new authority can be seen as a sign not of turnaround but of continuity. This of course raises the question, "What is the basis of Japanese ethics today (an additional six decades further on)? Has any movement been made in the direction of a universalistic ethic in Japan? Or is ethical value still realized in particularistic groups?” These questions are very difficult to answer, but I look forward to an exciting discussion at the Contemporary Anthropology Workshop toward this end.
